Global Warming Causes Crop Pests to Spread

London, Sep 2 (Prensa Latina) Global warming is forcing crop pests to spread to the North and South poles at a rate of nearly two miles by year, scientists revealed.

An article published by the Nature Climate Change shows a strong relation between the rise of global temperatures in the last 50 years and the growing amount of crop pests.

According to British scientists, the combined effects of a growing world population and the increased loss of crops to pests will pose a serious threat to global food security.

Already, between 10 per cent and 16 per cent of global crop production is lost to pests such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, insects, nematodes and worms. Previous researches have shown that losses caused by fungi and other micro-organisms alone amount to enough to feed 8.5 per cent of the global population.

Studies report that currently the pests concept should be at the same level as that of disease.
