Rousseff: "More Doctors" Program Serves 23 Million Brazilians

Brasilia, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) President Dilma Rousseff said today that the More Doctors program will have more than 6,500 doctors this week, providing health care to 23 million Brazilians.

"From now on, there will be more professionals, and we will not stop until we reach 13,000 primary healthcare specialists in April," Rousseff posted on her Twitter account.

She was referring to the placement of some 3,000 Cuban doctors in remote rural municipalities, after completing training to begin providing services in Brazil.

Another 2,400 doctors from Cuba have been working in northern and northeastern towns and communities since October.

On Friday, Rousseff said that if necessary, the government would create more jobs for health care providers, because "the number one job of a president is to take care of the people."

The More Doctors program will be evaluated in March, and if necessary, more foreign doctors will be brought in to provide services in rural and urban zones, she said.
