Tegucigalpa, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) Despite a prevention campaign to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito that has included fumigation in more than 98 000 homes, Honduras has recorded 15 546 cases of dengue and lethal victims amounted to 17 so far this year, confirmed today the Ministry of Health.

The disease has also been extended and now reaches 10 departments and 171 of the 298 municipalities in the country, said the head of epidemiology surveillance, Lara Bredy.

The source recalled that in 2012 dengue killed two people in Honduras, while in 2011 there were no deaths and in 2010 the epidemic claimed 83 lives.

Lara said the Permanent Contingency Commission has fumigated 98 462 houses inhabited by an estimated population of 465 444 people in the 315 settlements, neighborhoods and communities most affected by the epidemic.
