Tropical storm leaves one dead, another injured in Philippines

Manila, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) Tropical storm "Kong-Rey" , locally known as Nando, has left one person dead and another injured in the Philippines, the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Friday afternoon.

Fernando Briones, 59, from central Philippine province of Samar drowned, and Weller Golloso, 51, from northern Philippine province of Sorsogon was injured while crossing a spillway, the state agency said in its latest report.

Over 17,000 individuals or about 3,600 families from Provinces of Ilocos Norte, Benguet and Western Samar were affected by the weather disturbance, it said.

Some 128.31 million-peso-worth (about 2.88 million U.S. dollars) of emergency relief resources, including standby funds, food packs, and other relief items, have been extended to the affected population by Department of Social Welfare and Development, NDRRMC said, adding that Kong-Rey had left the country on Thursday.
