Chile's Earthquake Last September Reaches Almost 3,000 Aftershocks

Santiago de Chile, Mar 17 (Prensa Latina) At least 2,647 aftershocks have shaken central and northern Chile since the powerful 8.4 earthquake in the Coquimbo region that rocked the country last September 16th.

Data have been collected by the University of Chileâ?Ös National Seismological Center, adding that the earthquake caused a 7-meter movement in the Nazca plate.

According to scientists, the earth tremors over the last months, respond to the earthâ?Ös readjustment process in the affected areas, a process that could last for years, although the number of aftershocks are likely to decrease.

Head of the Seismological Centre Seismological Centre warned that strong earthquakes can be expected, although it is unlikely there is an earthquake in the same area, at least for now.

The earthquake left a death toll of 16 and affected tens of thousands of people.
