Tornado Causes Two Deaths, 120 Wounded in Southern Brazil

Sao Paulo, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) A tornado devastated the Brazilian city of Xanxere, in the southern state of Santa Catarina, and left two dead, 120 injured and more than 2,600 homes destroyed, officials said.

State authorities sent a commission to assess the damage and provide aid to the town, which remains without electricity and water, due to the effects caused by the tornado registered on Sunday night.

The fall of five towers of power transmission affects more than 200,000 houses Xanxere, highlighted spokesmen of the town, according to local radio stations.

The Fire Department reported that at least a thousand people were in shelters due to the destruction of their homes, while the Civil Defense of Santa Catarina distributed 630 mattresses and other supplies to those affected.

Of the 120 injured, 74 were taken to the hospital in Sao Paulo and five children are hospitalized in serious condition.
