WHO Confirmed Two New Cases of Ebola in Guinea

United Nations, Mar 18 (Prensa Latina) The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed today two new cases of Ebola in a rural town in southern Guinea, so it demanded the authorities to remain vigilant against possible additional infections.

In a press release the UN specialized agency stated that Guinean officials informed on Wednesday about three unexplained deaths in the village of Koropara and suspected symptoms of Ebola in other members of the same family.

According to WHO, laboratory tests performed to a five-year-old boy and his mother tested positive for the virus, which has killed 11,300 people in an epidemic that broke out in late 2013 in West Africa, with devastating impact on Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Experts of the organization and other entities work on the ground along with the local Ministry of Health, in surveillance, epidemiology, and social mobilization activities, he said.

It is expected to arrive in the coming days more specialists, with the main objective to investigate the source of new infections.

The two cases were confirmed in Guinea the same day the WHO declared the end of Ebola outbreak in neighboring Sierra Leone.

According to the UN agency, once again it is demonstrated the importance for the three West African countries hit by the virus to remain vigilant against possible flare-ups.

They must preserve their ability to prevent, detect and confront the Ebola because the risk has not totally disappeared, he said.
